2 cloves garlic, minced

1 cup breadcrumbs

1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1/4 cup chopped fresh basil

1 large egg, beaten

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1 teaspoon Italian seasoning

For the Neapolitan Sauce:

1 can (15 oz) crushed tomatoes

1 cup marinara sauce

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 teaspoon sugar

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

Salt and pepper to taste

For the Topping:

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Fresh basil leaves for garnish

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Prepare the Meatball Mixture: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, chopped onion, minced garlic, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, chopped basil, beaten egg, salt, black pepper, and Italian seasoning. Mix until well combined.

Form the Meatballs: Using your hands, shape the mixture into 1.5-inch meatballs and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

Bake the Meatballs: Bake meatballs in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes or until they are browned and cooked through.

Make the Sauce: In a medium saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add crushed tomatoes, marinara sauce, sugar, oregano, red pepper flakes (if using), and season with salt and pepper. Stir to combine and bring the sauce to a simmer.

Combine Meatballs and Sauce: Once the meatballs are done baking, carefully add them to the simmering sauce. Simmer for an additional 5-10 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.

Add Cheese: Preheat your broiler. Transfer the meatballs and sauce to a baking dish, sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese over the top, and place it under the broiler for 2-4 minutes or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.

Serve: Remove from the oven, garnish with fresh basil leaves, and serve with pasta, crusty bread, or on their own.
