Ingredients

6 slices of thick-cut bread (brioche or challah work well)

3 large eggs

1 cup whole milk

2 tablespoons brown sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

1/4 teaspoon salt

2 medium apples (preferably Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and diced

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1/4 cup chopped nuts (such as pecans or walnuts, optional)

Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)

Maple syrup for serving (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Bread: Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C). Arrange the slices of thick-cut bread in a single layer in a greased 9x13 inch baking dish.

Make the Egg Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, brown sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.

Add Apples: In a separate bowl, toss the diced apples with lemon juice to prevent browning. Fold the apples (and nuts if using) into the egg mixture, ensuring they are well coated.

Combine Mixtures: Pour the apple-egg mixture evenly over the bread, gently pressing the bread down to soak in the custard. Cover the baking dish with foil and let it sit for about 15-20 minutes to allow the bread to absorb the liquid.

Bake: Remove the foil and bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the egg is set.

Serve: Once baked, remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Dust with powdered sugar if desired and serve warm with a drizzle of maple syrup for added sweetness.
