Ingredients

8 oz spaghetti

1 lb ground beef or Italian sausage

1 small onion, diced

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes

1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce

2 tsp dried basil

1 tsp dried oregano

1 tsp salt

1/2 tsp black pepper

1/4 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)

2 cups ricotta cheese

1 egg

3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Fresh parsley or basil, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Cook the Spaghetti: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the spaghetti and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Brown the Meat: In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef or sausage. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon. Drain excess fat.

Sauté Vegetables: Add the diced onion to the skillet and cook for about 3-4 minutes until softened. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.

Make the Sauce: Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, dried basil, oregano, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using). Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Prepare Cheese Mixture: In a separate bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, 1 cup of the mozzarella cheese, and half of the grated Parmesan cheese. Mix until well combined.

Layer the Casserole: In a greased 9x13 inch baking dish, spread half of the cooked spaghetti. Top with half of the meat sauce, followed by dollops of the ricotta cheese mixture. Repeat the layers with the remaining spaghetti, meat sauce, and then sprinkle the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese on top.

Bake: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.

Garnish & Serve: Remove from the oven and let it cool for about 5-10 minutes. Garnish with fresh parsley or basil if desired. Cut into squares and serve warm.
