Ingredients

For the Meatballs:

1 lb ground beef (or a mix of beef and pork)

1/2 cup breadcrumbs (Italian-style preferred)

1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

1/2 teaspoon onion powder

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1 large egg

2 tablespoons milk

For the Sauce:

2 cups marinara sauce (store-bought or homemade)

1 teaspoon Italian seasoning

1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

For Assembling the Subs:

4 hoagie rolls or sub rolls

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Fresh basil leaves, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat Oven & Mix Ingredients: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). In a large mixing bowl, combine ground meat, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, parsley, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, salt, pepper, egg, and milk. Mix until just combined; avoid overmixing.

Form and Bake Meatballs: Shape the mixture into 1.5-inch meatballs and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the meatballs are cooked through and reach an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C).

Prepare the Sauce: While the meatballs are baking, heat marinara sauce in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir in Italian seasoning and red pepper flakes, then let simmer for about 10 minutes.

Combine Meatballs with Sauce: Once the meatballs are done baking, carefully transfer them to the saucepan with the marinara sauce. Gently stir to coat meatballs in the sauce.

Assemble the Subs: Slice the hoagie rolls open without cutting all the way through. Spoon several meatballs into each roll and generously pour extra sauce on top. Finish with a handful of shredded mozzarella cheese.

Melt the Cheese: Place the assembled subs on a baking sheet and bake in the oven for 5-7 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Serve: Remove the subs from the oven and let cool slightly. Garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired, then serve warm and enjoy!
